A 5-year-old Griffith boy died after struggling to swim in a pool last month, the Griffith Police announced Thursday.
First responders on July 22 were sent to the 1200 block of N. Wood Street around 8:16 p.m. after the boy was found in a backyard pool, the department said in an Aug. 1 release. They immediately started live-saving measures on the boy and transported him to a local hospital, where he was stabilized and taken to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital.
Dante Rivers died from his injuries at 4:16 p.m. on July 26, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police determined Rivers had gotten out of his home — located less than a block away — without telling anyone, triggering a neighborhood search, the release said.
“The community mourns with the family for their tragic loss,” the release said.
