Boy, 7, dies days after South Shore apartment fire, officials say

A 7-year-old boy who was critically injured in an apartment fire last Saturday in the South Shore neighborhood has died, officials said.

Adrian M. Matias Pena of the 2400 block of East 78th Street was pronounced dead late Wednesday afternoon at Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Adrian was injured in a blaze that broke out around 2:30 a.m. June 15 at 2414 E. 78th St. One person was killed and four others were injured, including two children, according to Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The children, ages two and seven were taken in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, and a 27-year-old man also was taken in critical condition to UChicago Medicine, Langford said. Another man was taken in fair condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital.

More than 20 people were displaced due to the blaze, officials said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
