Buffalo Grove PD held food, toiletry drive at Jewel store to help area food pantries meet demand

First thing one recent Saturday morning, members of the Buffalo Grove Police Department were at a local grocery store collecting food donations for an area food pantry.

The police department hoped to collect “as much as possible,” Officer Malcolm Baker told Pioneer Press, as fellow officers accepted non-perishable food items from shoppers at Jewel-Osco grocery store at 79 N. McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove.

Toiletry items were also accepted.

All of the items were to be donated to food pantries run by Vernon and Wheeling townships.

Township officials have previously told Pioneer Press that demands for food pantry items have increased. Collectively, the pantries help many area families on a monthly basis.

Baker said the collection at Jewel was “an opportunity for us (police department) to give back to the community.”

He said the department would likely do a similar drive closer to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
