Last, first babies born at Franciscan Crown Point
Franciscan Health Crown Point is celebrating the first and last babies born at its Family Birth Center following the Jan. 28 move to the new hospital, according to a release.
Joey Lee Krygsheld, who was born at 4:41 a.m., Jan. 28, was the last baby born at the now-former Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital’s Family Birth Center at 1201 S. Main St. to parents Caitlin and Joel Krygsheld of Cedar Lake. Oaklynn Elizabeth Williamson, born at 5:02 p.m. Jan. 28, was the first baby born at the new Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital’s Family Birth Center at 12750 Saint Francis Drive to parents Kyleigh Laska and Jesse Williamson of Hebron.
Caitlin and Joel Krygsheld of Cedar Lake, hold their newborn son, Joey Lee Krygsheld. Joey Lee was the last baby born at the now former Franciscan Health Crown Point hospital on Main Street at 4:41 a.m. Jan. 28.
The former hospital on Main Street is now known as Franciscan Health Main St. Outpatient Center, A Division of Franciscan Health Crown Point, and continues to house a variety of outpatient services, a release said. The new Franciscan Health Crown Point hospital is located on the southeast corner of U.S. 231 and Interstate 65.
Oaklynn Elizabeth Williamson was the first baby born at the new Franciscan Health Crown Point hospital on Saint Francis Drive Sunday evening. She is the daughter of Kyleigh Laska and Jesse Williamson of Hebron.
Upcycled family workshop announced
The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County will host an Upcycled Valentine’s Day Family Workshop from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 10 in partnership with Art Barn, according to a release. The workshop will take place at Art Barn School of Art, 695 N 400 E, Valparaiso.

Art Barn instructors will help participants turn trash into treasure using materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill, such as discarded cards, ribbon, scrap paper and small boxes and containers, the release said. The workshop is suitable for adults and children ages 6 and older with a parent.
Franciscan Alliance to fully acquire Franciscan Beacon Hospital
Franciscan Alliance will fully acquire Franciscan Beacon Hospital in LaPorte this spring, according to a release.
Franciscan Alliance and Beacon Health System entered an agreement in 2018 for a 50/50 joint partnership for the creation of Franciscan Beacon Hospital at 1010 Indiana 2 in LaPorte, the release said. As part of the acquisition, all Beacon Health System nursing, imaging staff and patient access employees currently employed at the hospital – roughly 33 people – will become Franciscan Alliance employees.
The closing date for the acquisition is scheduled for March 1, with a 90-day transition period to the new Franciscan facility planned thereafter, the release said.
Township fire department wins $5K grant
The Porter County Community Foundation (PCCF) Men’s Fund has awarded $5,000 to the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department (MTVFD), according to a release.
The fire department was selected to receive the grant to support the purchase of personal protective equipment for the firefighters, including jackets, pants, firefighting gloves, vehicle extrication gloves, fire helmets, fire boots and fire-resistant hoods, the release said.
The roster of firefighters at the MTVFD currently has 29 members, the most the department has ever had, the release said.
‘Stories from the Heart’ event Feb. 7 at Northwest Health – Porter
To commemorate American Heart Month, Northwest Health – Porter will host “Stories from the Heart,” showcasing the many ways heart disease connects citizens, according to a release. The event will take place from 1-1:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the main lobby of Northwest Health – Porter, located at 85 E. U.S. 6, Valparaiso.
“Stories from the Heart” will feature comments from hospital officials, a special account from a heart disease survivor and other hospital team members sharing how caring for your heart can increase longevity, the release said.

ArcelorMittal, Influential Women’s group to partner
The ArcelorMittal Global Research and Development Center has recently partnered with the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association as an elite partner, expanding the goals of both organizations to support the community and advance the achievements of women across multiple industries, according to a release.
ArcelorMittal Global R&D is an innovative division of the international steelmaker where new steel products, processes and solutions are envisioned, tested, improved and deployed, the release said. The organization employs around 1,500 full-time researchers at 11 geographical sites throughout the world.
PNW affirmed as doctoral-granting institution
Purdue University Northwest has been affirmed by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) as a doctoral-granting institution with its recent approval of a substantive change in mission or student body, according to a release.
The change coincided with the HLC’s approval of PNW’s third applied doctoral program, a Doctor of Psychology, the release said. PNW now offers three applied doctoral programs: the PsyD; a Doctor of Technology (DTech); and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). These degrees place research and theory into action instead of a primarily scholarly research focus of a Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D.
