Tobacco Prevention Coalition members, partners honored

The Lake County Tobacco Prevention Coalition recently recognized members, community partners and youth advocates with the organization’s annual awards, according to a release.

This year’s awards included the Bree Wilson Youth Advocate of the Year Award, which was presented by VOICE Indiana in partnership with the Healthy Hoosiers Foundation to Mieka Neely, a 2024 graduate of Thomas Edison Jr./Sr. High School in Lake Station. The award includes a
$1,000 scholarship, the release said.

VOICE is Indiana’s statewide program led by teenagers who seek to engage, educate and empower peers to celebrate a tobacco- and vape-free lifestyle. The Lake County Tobacco Prevention Coalition 2024 award recipients included Coalition Champ Karina Buenavides,
Engagement Champ Adrienne Jackson and Youth Advocate Champ Astrid Garett. Honorees for Special Projects were Penny Cochran, Adrienne Jackson, Connie Martin, and Karina Buenavides.

Top employees named at Northwest Health – Porter

Three Northwest Health – Porter employees were recognized as team members of the year recently, according to a release.

Each year, the hospital names a Team Member of the Year, Clinical Manager of the Year, and Non-Clinical Manager of the Year. This year’s honorees are:

Team Member of the Year:  Alex Uthuppan, Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Clinical Leader of the Year: Tamica Davis, director, Progressive Care, Orthopedics, Oncology and Med-Surg.

Non-clinical Leader of the Year: Glenda Dunkel, director, Patient Access.

Bank makes $3k donation to Center of Hope

The Franciscan Health Foundation of Northern Indiana recently received a $3,000 donation from Horizon Bank to support the Franciscan Health Michigan City Center of Hope program, according to a release.

Financial support for the Franciscan Health Michigan City Center of Hope program assists in the emotional, physical and spiritual healing of those impacted by sexual and physical assault and abuse, the release said.

The $3,000 gift will be used to purchase transportation vouchers, soft blankets, new clothing and undergarments to replace those that must be kept for evidence, hygiene items for patients to use to shower and restaurant gift cards, the release said. VU recognized 5th time for transfer process

Valparaiso University has been named to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Transfer Honor Roll for the fifth consecutive year, according to a release, recognizing the University’s excellence in the
development and support of dynamic and innovative transfer pathways for community college transfer students.

Being named to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Roll shows that VU is one of the most transfer-friendly schools in the nation, as determined by its admission practice, cost of attendance, campus life and recruitment practices, the release said.

Creating new pathways to higher education is one of the goals of the five-year Uplift Valpo strategic plan, the release said. The honor recognizes the work VU has already done in giving attention and care to transfer students from two-year and four-year institutions, non-traditional students and military students.

Franciscan Munster accredited for chest pain treatment

The American College of Cardiology has recognized Franciscan Health Munster for its expertise and commitment to treating patients with chest pain, according to a release.

Franciscan Munster was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack, the release said.

Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes, the release said.

Speaker announced for CP Rotary meeting

The Crown Point Rotary Club will host Joe Smith, from Three Pillars, an organization committed to enhancing community well-being through philanthropic programs and services, at the club’s July 24 meeting, according to a release.

The meeting will start at 12:10 PM at the Youche Country Club, 2301 W 129th Place, Crown Point.
