PNW supports K-12 students through school supply giveaways

Purdue University Northwest helped more than 900 local schoolchildren kick off the school year by providing them necessary supplies to support their education journeys. PNW hosted community backpack and school supply giveaways on Aug. 1 at its Hammond and Westville campuses, benefiting families in need with new backpacks, notebooks, folders, writing utensils and other core school items.

PNW is committed to serving as a community partner that identifies and responds to community members’ needs. Other local vendors, including health care agencies, college and career readiness organizations, childcare referral services and prevention services, were also on site to assist families.

NiSource reports 2nd quarter earnings

NiSource Inc. (NI) on Wednesday reported net income of $85.8 million in its second quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Merrillville, Indiana-based company said it had profit of 19 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 21 cents per share.

The energy holding company posted revenue of $1.08 billion in the period.

NiSource expects full-year earnings in the range of $1.70 to $1.74 per share.

Franciscan program receives 400K diapers

Franciscan Health’s Prenatal Assistance Program recently received a donation of more than 400,000 Huggies diapers from the National Diaper Bank Network, according to a release.

The National Diaper Bank Network works in partnership with its network of diaper banks – including those at Franciscan Health — allied programs, donors, sponsors and elected officials to end diaper need and period poverty in the United States, the release said.

Franciscan’s Diaper Pantry program allows eligible families to obtain free diapers, wipes and more. Those interested in the program should call 1-877-773-6285 to check eligibility, register for the program and schedule an appointment. For donation information, call 219-661-3401.

Black Chamber to host loan seminar

The Black Chamber of Commerce of NWI, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, is offering a program focused on accessing
capital and navigating the loan process, according to a release.

The program will take place from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 15 at Brown Skin Coffee, 1925 W. 25th Ave.,  Gary. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members.

The program is designed to provide business owners with insights and tools to secure funding for business ventures, the release said. Additionally, attendees will learn how to complete a balance sheet, profit and loss statements and projection paperwork — components required for securing loans and making informed business decisions, the release said.

Franciscan Health Dyer partnering with The Milk Bank

Franciscan Health Dyer is collaborating with The Milk Bank to become both a donation site and pick-up location for outpatient families, according to a release.

The Milk Bank, a non-profit milk bank headquartered in Indianapolis, receives donations of extra human milk from screened donors. In their milk lab, donations are nutritionally analyzed, bottled and pasteurized before being dispensed to hospitals and outpatients, the release said.

The partnership’s Milk Express program provides quick access to orders of pasteurized donor human milk for families at home, the release said. Those interested in receiving pasteurized donor human milk for their infant through the Milk Express program can complete the intake form online at https://www.themilkbank.org/milk-express, pay the processing fee and choose Franciscan Health Dyer as their pick up location, the release said.

Franciscan WorkingWell to host free healthcare solutions event

Franciscan WorkingWell is hosting a free, day-long symposium Sept. 12 aimed at helping employers find healthcare solutions, a release said.

“Today’s Healthcare Solutions for Employers” will showcase expert speakers from WorkingWell addressing a variety of diverse topics,
including THC (the primary intoxicant in marijuana) in the workplace, according to a release.

The symposium will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Lincoln Hwy., Merrillville. Breakfast and lunch will be

Powers Health to bring emergency care to Valparaiso

Powers Health recently announced a new Emergency Department will be built at the St. Mary Medical Center Outpatient Center, 3800 St. Mary Drive, Valparaiso, according to a release.

The 7,000-square-foot freestanding St. Mary Medical Center Emergency Department is scheduled to open late 2024, the release said. The new building addition of 3,600 square feet offers imaging and laboratory services for timely diagnoses and treatments.

This full-service department will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, the release said.
