Doctor joins Marram Health Center

Dr. Keith M. Ramsey, who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, recently began seeing patients at Marram Health Center’s Gary location, 3229 Broadway, according to a release.

Ramsey has more than 30 years of experience in women’s health and previously served as the Director of OB/GYN at North Shore Health Centers and the Director of Perinatal Medicine at the Gary Health Department, the release said.

Ramsey has delivery privileges at both Methodist Hospital Northlake and Southlake locations. He earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College and completed his residency at Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago, the release said.

Mrvan announces grants for four communities

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, recently announced federal grant awards for Crown Point, Merrillville, Portage and Valparaiso under the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, according to a release.

According to the DOT, the SS4A program aims to improve roadway safety by supporting communities in developing plans to implement infrastructure projects designed to reduce transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries, the release said.

Crown Point will receive $280,000, Merrillville will receive $280,000, Portage will receive $280,000 and Valparaiso will receive $200,000 to develop comprehensive safety action plans that aim to eliminate roadway fatalities, the release said.

The SS4A Grant program was created under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Mrvan supported, the release said.

Boys & Girls Clubs starts ‘Return to Learn’ campaign

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana recently launched its annual “Return to Learn” match campaign, taking place through Sept. 25, according to a release.

During the two-week campaign, each of the organization’s 10 clubs will compete to raise the most donations for the organization’s 5,000+ members. University of Chicago Medicine will match donations up to $100,000, the release said.

Influential Women winners to be announced

More than 900 attendees are set to celebrate women in business during the 13th annual Influential Women of Northwest Indiana Awards Banquet from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Merrillville, a release said.

Winners will be selected from a group of 226 finalists, which were chosen from more than 430 nominees submitted to the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association (NWIIWA). Two winners will be announced in each of 12 industry categories — one as an Up and Coming winner and the other as an Influential Woman winner. Overall Up and Coming and Influential Woman of the Year awards will also be presented.

10 projects win Porter County grant funding

First Things First Porter County (FTF) has awarded a total of $100,000 to 10 community projects that will support prenatal through 3-year-old systems of care in Porter County, according to a release.

The $10,000 Collaboration Challenge Grants are awarded to sets of partnering organizations who propose a project that will increase, improve or enhance programming and/or services for Porter County infants, toddlers and their families, the release said.

Projects receiving grants include: Healthy Beginnings Porter County (Mental Health America of Northwest Indiana, Porter County Health Department and the Porter County Fetal Infant Mortality Review team), Early Connections: Building Home-School Connections from Birth (Parents as Teachers Porter County and Portage Township Schools), Food is Health: Prenatal – Three (Powers Health and Valparaiso Family YMCA), Expanding Early Childhood Support through Duneland School and Kidworks Partnership (Duneland School Corp.’s Early Learning HUB), Building Strong Foundations – Prenatal Memberships (Portage Township YMCA and Northshore Health Centers), Intensive Developmental Milestone Training Opportunities for Duneland Family YMCA Early Learning Center Teachers and Caregivers (Duneland Family YMCA and Jacob’s Ladder Pediatric Rehabilitation), Empowering Mothers: Awareness, Recovery, and Support Campaign (Three20 Recovery, Gabriel’s Horn and Homes of
Compassion (Bringing Children Hope)), Perinatal Mental Health: An Integrated Care Approach for Health Professionals (Porter-Starke Services Inc. and Powers Health), Discovery Forest (Kidworks LLC and Valpo Parks),  and Early Childhood Environmental Education is a Powerful Tool to Help Children Grow, Learn and Develop (Dunes Learningn Center, Duneland Family YMCA, and Duneland Early Learning HUB).

Grants support initiatives at EC hospital

St. Catherine Hospital has received grants for a program that benefits newborns and a program designed to stem hospital readmissions, according to a release.

The Legacy Foundation recently awarded the hospital $12,000 in grants to support the Safe Discharge for Newborns program. Foundations of East Chicago awarded a $20,000 grant for the Hospital Readmission Prevention program, a release said.

The readmission prevention program provides education and medication to patients when they are discharged from the hospital while the safe discharge program offers a network of resources, education and support to ensure mothers are aware of sound practices for their newborn after leaving the hospital, the release said.

OB/GYN joins Franciscan Physician Network in Winfield

Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Padmaja Sanaka recently became a part of the Franciscan Physician Network in Winfield, according to a release.

Sanaka attended medical school at Kurnool Medical College in India and completed her residency in Chicago at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County and at Northwestern University Hospital, the release said.

Sanaka is accepting patients at Winfield Health Center, 11161 Randolph St., Winfield.
