Valparaiso police awarded 5th CALEA accreditation

The Valparaiso Police Department has been awarded its fifth accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA), according to a release.

The accreditation process, and this award, is the culmination of self-evaluation, concluded in a review from independent assessors and CALEA commissioners, accomplished through a body of professional standards. It is one of 14 municipalities in the state of Indiana to achieve the accreditation, the release said.

Edgewater Health marks National Health Center Week

Edgewater Health is celebrating National Health Center Week with a variety of healthy activities and conversations under the umbrella of its “Mind, Body and Spirit” series, according to a release.

Included in the activities was a 60-minute circuit session with Tiffany Blakemore, owner of Vitamin T Fitness in Merrillville. The free workout session included cycling (spin), chair exercises and trampoline.

Other recent activities hosted by Edgewater included Patient Appreciation Day on Aug. 7, with free nutritional treat bags for all clients and visitors to Edgewater locations and the Aug. 10 presentation by Dr. Nchekwube, “10 Habits of Happy and Healthy People.”

Valparaiso Police Department seeking applicants

The Valparaiso Police Department is accepting applications for police officers, according to a release.

Applicants must complete the application via PoliceApp.com or at www.valparaisopolice.org. Minimum requirements to be considered include being a U.S. citizen 21-40 years of age with a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license and have no prior felony convictions, the release said.

Franciscan Michigan City, Munster plan free youth in crisis courses

Franciscan Health Michigan City and Franciscan Health Munster are presenting free, one-day courses this fall aimed at helping anyone who regularly interacts with young people to better understand and help them when they are struggling, according to a release.

The intensive, free workshops introduce common mental health challenges of youth, review typical adolescent development and teach a five-step action plan to help young people in crisis and non-crisis situations.

The free Mental Health First Aid for Youth in Crisis course is scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Multipurpose Room of the Franciscan Health Michigan City Legacy Campus, 301 W. Franciscan Health Dyer to host free baby expo

Franciscan Health Dyer is hosting a free baby expo for expectant families and new parents, according to a release.

The Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Baby Expo is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 7 at Franciscan Health Dyer, 24 Joliet St. in the first floor conference rooms.

Information and education on car seat safety, prenatal care, safe sleep and breastfeeding will be offered along with information from health vendors, clinical staff, healthcare providers and community resources. Tours of the Family Birth Center will also be available. The event is free, but registration is required. Call 1-800-931-3322.

PNW adds AI master’s degree

(PNW) will begin offering a new Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence degree program, with the first students expected to begin courses in the spring, according to a release.

Applied Artificial Intelligence students will learn how AI can be harnessed for challenging real-world problems, data analysis, task automation and process efficiencies in these fields and beyond, the release said.
