Calumet College marks Jubilee year giving back

Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting is celebrating the Catholic church’s 2025 Jubilee year by pledging 5,000 hours of community service, officials announced last week.

“Hope and service are two words that have significant meaning on our campus,” said Amy McCormack, Calumet College president.

“We have great hope for our students as we guide and support them along life’s journey, and our students provide valuable service to our community. Our strategic planning for CCSJ is all about serving and strengthening our communities.”

Calumet College has pledged 5,000 hours of community service in celebration to mark the Jubilee year, celebrated by Catholics every 25 years.

Pope Francis has proclaimed 2025 “The Year of Hope,” recommending a recommitment to spreading the message of hope and helping neighbors.

The college kicked off its effort last week and 30 students, faculty, and staff members attended the event.

The Rev. Tim McFarland told the gathering: “In many ways, hope is what we are about here. Through education, students have hope for a better future for themselves and their families. Faculty and staff have hope in our students and in each other to reach our goals and full potential.”

A large white ribbon will be on display and will fill with crimson as the St. Joseph community continues to move toward the shared goal of 5,000 service hours during the year.
