A Gary man’s charges were upgraded earlier this week after a man beat on Christmas Day later died.
Larry Buchanan, Jr., 42, was charged Dec. 30 with murder, aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and intimidation.
Darryl Bradley, 55, died Dec. 27, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Gary Police responded at 8:50 p.m. Dec. 25 to the 1100 block of Jennings Street for a reported beating.
Bradley’s girlfriend said Buchanan, her relative, had stayed there for two months.
Buchanan had been off his medication when he started badly beating Bradley for an unknown reason, she said. Buchanan punched him with his fists before Bradley fell, then he stomped on him repeatedly and knelt to punch him again in the face. The girlfriend tried to intervene, but Buchanan threatened to hit her as well. He appeared “heavily intoxicated” and couldn’t stand, police wrote.
Bradley was found lying face up with blood coming down his face. His eyes were swollen shut and he was “gurgling” and “unresponsive.”
He was taken to Methodist Northlake, before he was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
