Glenview man arrested on hate crime, aggravated battery charges, police say

A 69-year-old Glenview man was arrested on Sep. 27 on felony hate crime charges and aggravated battery for beating a victim with a metal pipe, according to Glenview police. According to Glenview Deputy Police Chief Mark Ciesla, Randy Velleff, of the 1700 block of Grove Avenue, was in an argument with a victim, which led Velleff to beat the victim with a metal pipe on June 30. Planned Wilmette police station estimated to cost $51.4 million

The project to build the first new Police Station in Wilmette since 1968 is now estimated to cost $51.4 million, up from the $34 million provided by village officials last October. The new Police Station will be the village’s largest public facility investment in the last fifty years, according to village staff. Village Manager Michael Braiman said the increase in cost is due to the extreme construction inflation costs since 2020. Braiman said the $34 million was a pre-pandemic placeholder figure. Evanston OKs $208,000 for track, lighting at incoming Foster School

Evanston’s City Council approved spending $207,000 for a track and lights for the incoming Foster School near Ashland Avenue and Simpson Street on Monday. The city is using tax increment financing district funds for it and plans for it to be used by the public on weekends and evenings when students are not in class. Council Member Bobby Burns (5th) brought the measure to the city council for the first time at the city council meeting.
