Illinois lawmakers fail again to pass hemp regulations and medical cannabis expansion

Illinois lawmakers again failed to take action to keep dangerous hemp products out of the hands of children, prompting a call from Gov. J.B. Pritzker to regulate the industry. The measure had bipartisan support and easily passed the Senate, but stalled in the House of Representatives at the end of the legislative session Wednesday. Divisions […]

Illinois hemp businesses owners call for regulation and taxation, not prohibition

The last thing most business owners want is to be taxed and regulated, but hemp business owners are asking for just that — as a way to keep their industry alive. Hemp entrepreneurs came out Tuesday in favor of a proposal to license hemp sales, require testing and labeling of their products, prohibit products that look like well-known snack brands, and limit sales to those 21 and over. The bill also would impose taxes on the products. That proposal stands in contrast with a bill backed by the Cannabis Business Association of Illinois, which would prohibit sales of hemp-derived intoxicating […]

With possible marijuana reclassification, Indiana legislature unlikely to shift stance on legalization

As the federal government signals a shift in marijuana classification, area Indiana legislators have little faith it will influence the state to take action toward legalizing marijuana in some form. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. The proposal, which still has […]

Illinois pot businesses could gain tax benefits, easier loan access under DEA reclassification

Cannabis company owners in Illinois welcomed the news Tuesday that the federal government is expected to reclassify marijuana as a drug with medicinal value and lower potential for abuse. The Associated Press reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. Rather than continuing to classify cannabis with much stronger drugs like heroin and LSD, the move would put pot in the same class with certain prescription drugs like codeine, ketamine, steroids, and testosterone. The change will not be immediately noticeable to most consumers in Illinois, where medical and recreational use already […]

I doobie? Weed wedding the latest sign of spread of cannabis events

At a recent wedding reception in Chicago, guests gathered to toast the newlyweds at the bar. Glasses were lined up in front of them, but no alcohol was poured. Instead, marijuana vapor was pumped into the upside-down glasses, which were then lifted and inhaled in unison. “A lot of people were surprised,” bride Aja Heinlein said. “They didn’t even know that was something they could do.” In the new world of cannabis, consumption at private events like weddings, holiday parties and corporate events is becoming more common. The state law that legalized recreational use of marijuana for adults 21 and […]

Celebrations planned in Chicago and beyond to mark 420 — the unofficial cannabis holiday

Four years into cannabis legalization in Illinois, celebrations of the April 20 informal weed holiday known as 420 are getting bigger and more widespread. Named for the time of day a group of friends met to get high, 420 has become a chance for marijuana users to publicly share a previously illegal drug and the counter-cultural atmosphere surrounding it. The main event in downtown Chicago likely will be the second annual 420 Sesh Fest, at Green Rose Dispensary. The party will include live music, a magic show, carnival games, food trucks, pop ups, and product discounts. It also will feature Grammy-nominated […]
