Oak Lawn police said Tuesday a 20-year-old man was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder in connection with the July 2022 holdup of a jewelry store in which an employee was shot and wounded.
Police said Dionte Reed was taken into custody Friday in Indiana and will have a court appearance Aug. 29 at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview.
Police said three men entered Reichman Jewelers, drew firearms and disarmed a security guard the afternoon of July 1.
As the robbery continued, a co-owner of the store, Odysseus “Odyss” Tsarouhis, came out from the back of the store and was shot twice in the chest, police said.
The men smashed jewelry cases, took jewelry and fled in a vehicle, police said.
Early last month, Oak Lawn detectives were notified by the Illinois State Police forensic laboratory of a DNA match on physical evidence recovered at the scene, police said.
Reed was identified as a suspect and detectives worked to locate him, obtaining arrest warrants, police said. Oak Lawn police said they worked with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and Bloomington, Indiana police, and Reed was taken into custody and held in the Monroe County jail in Bloomington.
Reed was later ordered held at Cook County Jail pending his next court date, according to police.
He is originally from Chicago but had been living in Indian, according to Patrick Curran, chief of Oak Lawn’s detectives division.
Reichman Jewelers had been in Oak Lawn, at 4439 W. 95th St., at the time of the holdup, but has since relocated to neighboring Hickory Hills.
Police said the investigation into the July 2022 robbery is still active and said they are trying to locate the other two men. Police ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 708-907-4051, or to send tips by text to 708-613-8477.
