Chicago area at risk of tornadoes as waves of showers and thunderstorms forecast on Wednesday

National Weather Service officials are expecting Wednesday waves of showers and thunderstorms to hit the Chicago area capable of producing damaging winds and large hail and possibly tornadoes.

Officials issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of north central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Wednesday morning, warning of a significant thunderstorm risk.

The storms are expected to bring damaging winds up to 75 mph and could lead to tornados in portions of north central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, officials said. Hail up to 2 inches in diameter is possible as well as flooding.

Officials said the strongest of the storms are expected in the morning hours, and any storms that developed in the afternoon will be capable of strong winds and large hail including a tornado threat.

The expected storms also put low-lying areas with poor drainage at risk for flooding, officials said.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are light rain and mist at 42 degrees. At Midway Airport conditions are similar at 42 degrees.
