A Chicago firefighter is recovering after a fall during a fire in Humboldt Park Sunday, resulting in a number of broken bones, including broken vertebrae, according to Patrick Clearly, president of the union that represents Chicago firefighters.
The fire took place on the second floor of a three-story apartment building in the 800 block of North Hamlin Avenue around 6 p.m., Clearly said.
The firefighter was on the roof of the building and fell down a “light shaft,” a vertical hole in the middle of the building that lets light into rooms, according to Clearly.
The man was taken Stroger Hospital, Clearly said.
“(He was) still in lots of pain and they still need to do more tests and imaging,” Clearly said Monday morning.
A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said on Monday the firefighter was stable and “in good spirits.” The spokesman, Larry Merritt, declined to provide any other details about the fall.
