Chicago man charged after 2 carjacking attempts in Oak Lawn

A 22-year-old Chicago man is charged with attempted carjacking after a police pursuit Sunday morning in Oak Lawn.

Jeremiah Space, who police say is a felon and parolee, was scheduled to have a detention hearing Monday at the Bridgeview courthouse, according to Oak Lawn police.

Police said Evergreen Park police broadcast word about 9:45 a.m that a stolen vehicle had entered neighboring Oak Lawn.

An Oak Lawn officer saw the vehicle in the 4900 block of 95th Street, stopped in traffic that was waiting for a train to pass, police said.

The officer approached the vehicle on foot while an Evergreen Park unit, with emergency lights activated, pulled up behind the vehicle, according to the release.

Space accelerated, ramming a vehicle that was stopped in front of him, then his car became lodged against the curb, police said. Space and a passenger ran off in different directions, police said.

The passenger had a handgun with an extended clip that he threw while being pursued by the Oak Lawn officer, police said. He ran to a waiting stolen Range Rover in the eastbound lanes of 95th and got away, police said.

Space was pursued by the Evergreen Park officer and attempted to hijack two different occupied vehicles on 95th, police said.

One driver said Space had a gun and threatened to shoot, according to the news release.

The Evergreen Park officer chased Space into the parking lot of the Oak
Lawn Children’s Museum, where Space again attempted to hijack a vehicle, police said.

A man was getting out of his vehicle with his son when Space demanded the
vehicle, but was caught by the Evergreen Park officer.

Space did not have a gun when he was taken into custody, but it was later found on a rooftop. Police said the gun had an extended clip and had been modified to be fired automatically.

Along with two charges of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking, Space is charged with a felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, police said.

Police said that the investigation is continuing.
