Chicago man charged with Hobart rape

A Chicago man has been charged with raping a woman in Hobart in February.

The woman, according to a probable cause affidavit, was at a friend’s place in the 500 block of W. 39th Place with the friend’s boyfriend and a friend of his called “Red” when they started drinking heavily. The two men ran out for more alcohol, and after more drinking and smoking a joint, “Red” took the woman into the bathroom and started groping her over her objection, records said.

The next thing she remembered was waking up next to “Red” with her underwear around her leg, the affidavit said. When she confronted him about what happened, he said “Nothing,” so she called her sister, who told her to have a rape examination done, according to court records.

Further investigation revealed that the victim had been texting with “Red” — later identified as Martise E. Lowe — and they had sent pictures to each other, but when she met him in person, he wasn’t the person in the photos, records said. After police identified him through his phone number, they presented the victim with a six-person picture lineup; she immediately identified Lowe, records said.

The boyfriend then had Lowe contact police, records said, and he told them the victim “got frisky” and pursued him. He then said she drank twice as much as him and never told him to stop.

Lowe has been charged with Rape, a Level 3 felony. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
