Chicago weather: cool temps and possibly wet this week

Following last week’s summer-like temperatures in the mid-80s, severe thunderstorms that pounded the south and southwest suburbs Thursday night and a dust storm that blanketed Chicago and northern Illinois on Friday, Chicagoans can expect to be thrown another weather curve ball this week: cool temps and possibly wet.

The weather is expected to mostly be cool and calm Monday, with a high of 57 expected. But there is a possibility for rain in the afternoon and evening from rain showers moving up from Central Illinois, weather officials said.

The showers are expected to be light, although there is a possibility for more moderate to heavy rain. The rain is also expected to continue through the night and into Tuesday, with a chance for additional rain on Wednesday. There is also a slight chance for a thunder storm Tuesday evening, but nothing severe, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures in Chicago are expected to be in the 50s early this week, possibly jumping to the 60s on Thursday, according to the weather service.

While Chicago will overall see temperatures in the 50s for Monday, the south and southwest suburbs will see temperatures in the 60s.

The weekend is expected to see temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s inland of Chicago, with temperatures closer to lower 60s along the lakeshore, the weather service said.

The fluctuation in temperature is normal for this time of year, weather officials said. Temperatures around this time of year are typically in the 60s, but it is also possible to see temperatures ranging from the 80s to the 40s throughout May.

The rain storms are also a normal part of spring in the Midwest, weather officials say.

“Chicago, it’s spring, it’s transition season, that sort of thing happens,” said Kevin Doom, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “That sort of wild weather we’ve been seeing honestly is pretty normal.”
