Chicago weather: Snow expected through Friday afternoon, with gusts up to 35 mph

National Weather Service officials are expecting snow to continue throughout Friday with daytime accumulation of at least an inch.

Officials said snowfall will continue all across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana until about 5 p.m. Friday with snow totals of about an inch possible. Friday is expected to be blustery with a 20 percent chance of snow showers before 8 p.m. and wind gusts as high as 35 mph, officials said.

The wind was expected to increase this morning as officials warned of snow-covered roadways possibly creating slick conditions and cautioned commuters to allow extra time for travel.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are light snow and breezy at 34 degrees and a windchill of 1 degree. At Midway Airport conditions are fog and mist at 35 degrees with a windchill of 2 degrees, officials reported.

Lake effect snow showers are expected near Lake Michigan in northeast Illinois Friday afternoon shifting to northwest Indiana late into the afternoon and night. Officials said low visibility will be a possibility.
