Chicago White Sox acquire lefty Tyler Gilbert in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies

The Chicago White Sox added a left-handed pitching option Wednesday, acquiring Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor-league right-hander Aaron Combs.

Gilbert, 31, spent most of 2024 with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 31 relief appearances. He also pitched in six games with the Phillies, allowing three runs in 8 1/3 innings (3.24 ERA).

He is 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 34 career games (13 starts) during parts of four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2021-23) and Phillies (2024). The Phillies designated him for assignment on Dec. 22.

Gilbert set big-league career highs in innings (40) and strikeouts (25) while going 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA in nine outings (six starts) for the Diamondbacks in 2021. He went 0-3 with a 5.24 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) the following season. Gilbert made 11 relief appearances in 2023.

Combs, 23, had a 0.00 ERA in 7 2/3 innings during six outings for Class A Kannapolis after being selected in the eighth round of the 2024 draft out of Tennessee.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Sox designated Braden Shewmake for assignment. The infielder appeared in 29 games with the Sox in 2024, going 8-for-64 (.125) with one home run and four RBIs. He was acquired from Atlanta on Nov. 18, 2023 as part of a six-player deal that sent reliever Aaron Bummer to the Braves.

With Wednesday’s moves, the Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
