Chicago White Sox promote infielder Brooks Baldwin from Triple A as they return from the All-Star break with several roster moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brooks Baldwin has produced at two minor-league levels this season.

It has led to a major-league opportunity.

The Chicago White Sox promoted the infielder from Triple-A Charlotte, one of several roster moves announced before Friday’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

The Sox also designated catcher Martín Maldonado for assignment — a move first reported Wednesday — and brought up catcher Chuckie Robinson from Charlotte. They placed pitcher Michael Soroka on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right shoulder strain and recalled reliever Steven Wilson from Charlotte.

Baldwin slashed .322/.386/.441 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs in 74 games at Double-A Birmingham. The switch hitter joined Charlotte on July 4 and went 10-for-29 (.345) with three doubles, two home runs and four RBIs in his first eight games.

He has made 57 starts this season at shortstop, 15 at second base, six at third base and three in left field.

The Sox selected Baldwin in the 12th round of the 2022 draft out of UNC Wilmington. He has a .284/.358/.430 slash line with 23 home runs and 104 RBIs in 202 career minor-league games.

Robinson was slashing .246/.292/.382 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 55 games for Charlotte. He joined the organization this past offseason as a minor-league free agent. The Sox added him to the 40-man roster on June 16.

Robinson, who is from Danville, Ill., played in 25 games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2022, hitting .136 (8-for-59) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBIs.

Maldonado slashed .119/.174/.230 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 48 games this season. He signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Sox during the offseason.

Soroka suffered his injury in the third inning Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Guaranteed Rate Field. He is 0-10 with a 5.23 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 22 games (nine starts).

Wilson is 1-5 with a 3.46 ERA, eight holds and 26 strikeouts in 30 appearances for the Sox. He returns after being optioned on July 8.

Infielder Danny Mendick, who was designated for assignment Wednesday, cleared waivers and was assigned to Charlotte. Reliever Jimmy Lambert is beginning a rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League White Sox. The right-hander is recovering from a rotator cuff strain.
