Chicago White Sox to promote pitcher Grant Taylor straight from Double A to the majors

The Chicago White Sox plan on promoting right-handed pitcher Grant Taylor to the major leagues on Tuesday, a source confirmed to the Tribune.

Taylor, 23, has been outstanding at Double-A Birmingham, going 0-1 with a 1.01 ERA in 15 outings (six starts). He has 37 strikeouts and 11 walks in 26 2/3 innings.

Asked on Friday about Taylor’s success with the Barons, Sox general manager Chris Getz said: “He’s above 100 mph, he’s commanding the zone, the offspeed stuff is really strong. It’s very clear that hitters are uncomfortable in the box. They try to get him early. So it’s either weak contact or perhaps they’ll get him on a hit once in a while. But once they get to two strikes it gets over fairly quickly.”

Taylor, the No. 6 prospect in the Sox system according to MLB.com, began 2025 in the Barons’ rotation before shifting into a relief role.

Sox senior adviser to pitching Brian Bannister said on May 27 in New York of Taylor’s move to the bullpen: “We all want to just do what’s best for him. Not limiting him to a specific role but literally just preparing him the best we can, developing him, being conscious of his prior injury history, total workload on the year and just give him a chance to really help this organization and have a great career, earn a lot of money and all of the above. And he’s doing a great job and he’s having fun.”

The Sox selected Taylor in the second round of the 2023 draft out of LSU. He missed the 2023 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and had a 1.13 ERA last year with Class A Kannapolis, striking out 25 in 16 innings during a season affected by a lat injury.

Taylor stood out in spring training and carried it over to Birmingham. He has a 1.56 ERA in the six starts for the Barons and has not allowed a run while striking out 18 in 9 1/3 innings during nine relief appearances.

James Fox of FutureSox initially reported the promotion. The Sox begin a three-game series Tuesday in Houston.
