Cicero man charged with murder in West Garfield Park Thanksgiving shooting

A Cicero man was charged with the murder of a 62-year-old in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on Thanksgiving afternoon.

Police arrested Gad Hughes, 29, on Friday. Authorities said Hughes had fired gunshots outside in the 4000 block of West Monroe Street around 3:20 p.m. Thursday, striking Ignacio Mendiola, 62, while he was inside his home. It was initially unclear whether he was the intended target.

Mendiola was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his head and died two days later of his injuries, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which identified him Saturday.

Hughes now faces one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of heroin possession. He was scheduled to appear in court Sunday.
