The Aurora City Council is set to approve new signs for Chicago Premium Outlets on the far East Side.
Aldermen are expected to approve a revision to a special sign district that already exists for the mall. Because the request is on the consent agenda for Tuesday’s regular meeting, it is expected to pass.
The original outlet mall was built in 2002, thanks to a development agreement with the city, and opened in 2004. At the time, it had 438,000 square feet of retail buildings.
Based on the success of that first phase, mall owner Simon Property Group and the city entered into a second development agreement in 2014 for an expansion on the land directly to the east.
The expansion included constructed in 2015 of an additional 293,000 square feet of retail buildings, bringing the mall up to 731,000 square feet of retail.
The sign revision will allow mall officials to change the main pylon signs for the mall on both Interstate 88 and Farnsworth Avenue to include identification panels for five of the tenant stores in the mall.
It will also allow six tenant identification panels over the shopping center name below the gateway signs at the entrance of the north side of the mall.
City officials have said the revision will allow individual stores at the mall to have additional visibility from the tollway and Farnsworth Avenue.
The city originally approved the special sign district for the mall in 2015.
