Gary Branch of the NAACP honored with Thalheimer Award

The Gary branch of the NAACP was recently awarded the Thalheimer Award in recognition of its outstanding achievements and contributions to the community during the 115th National Convention in July in Las Vegas.

The Thalheimer Award, one of the NAACP’s highest honors, is bestowed upon branches that demonstrate exceptional advocacy, effective programs, and impactful community outreach. This award highlights the Gary NAACP’s dedication to civil rights, social justice, and community empowerment.

U.S. 6 to close between Indiana 49 and Westville

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor LGS Plumbing Inc. will close U.S. 6 between Mander Road and County Road 350 E on or after Monday, August 26.

U.S. 6 will be closed through late December for two consecutive small structure replacements. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow Indiana 49 and Indiana 2.

Mrvan delivers federal funding for Munster Police Department

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan joined Munster Police Chief Stephen Scheckel, Munster Clerk-Treasurer Wendy Mis, Munster Town Council President David Nellans and Indiana State Representative Mike Andrade on Monday to highlight the use of federal funding for the Munster Police Department.

Mrvan’s request for federal Community Project Funding for the Munster Police Department was approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations law.  Specifically, the Munster Police Department will receive $215,000 to upgrade technology and equipment.  These upgrades will improve efficiencies within the Munster Police Department and enhance officers’ efforts to effectively investigate and solve crimes, according to a release.

Aldo Leopold and ‘A Sand County Almanac’ talk at national park

Join Aldo Leopold Foundation Director Buddy Huffaker from 7-8 p.m. on Monday at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center for a talk about Aldo Leopold’s impact on the conservation movement.  Leopold is mostly known as the author of the classic “A Sand County Almanac,” which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Huffaker will provide a quick biographical sketch of Aldo Leopold and then focus on the people and events that have kept “A Sand County Almanac” and the call for a land ethic as relevant as ever.

NIPSCO completes third solar project

Taking the next step forward in its electric generation transition to a more diverse, balanced and reliable portfolio, Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC, a subsidiary of NiSource Inc., announced the completion of another solar project in its electric generation fleet.

Cavalry Energy Center, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, developed and constructed the 200-megawatt solar facility with an additional 45 MW of battery energy storage capability located in White County.

The facility will produce enough energy to power approximately 60,000 homes, and it is expected to generate approximately $25 million in additional tax revenue for White County over the life of the project.

Cavalry Solar joins two additional solar projects in NIPSCO’s electric generating portfolio – Indiana Crossroads Solar also located in White County and Dunns Bridge I Solar in Jasper County. Dunns  Bridge II Solar, located in Jasper and Starke counties is under construction by another subsidiary of  NextEra Energy Resources.

ISP accepting applicants for criminal analysts

The Indiana State Police is accepting applications for five Criminal Analysts II positions to serve in the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center in Indianapolis. The primary responsibility is to perform all analytical tasks on criminal intelligence to support law enforcement functions relating to the “all Crimes, all Hazards” mission of the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center.

South Shore Roller Derby returns to Valparaiso in September

South Shore Roller Derby hosts a home game on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Urschel Pavilion at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso.

The doors open at 5 p.m. and the South Shore Roller Derby Derailers face off against Lakeshore Roller Derby’s Beach Bruisers. The second bout starts around 7 p.m., where the South Shore Roller Derby Runaways will battle against Lakeshore Roller Derby’s Tulip City All Stars.

Admission to this family-friendly event is $10 for adults, $5 for children aged 5 to 13, and free for kids under 5. Tickets can be purchased at the door and concessions will be available. As seating might be limited, remember to bring a chair. A portion of the proceeds from this event will directly benefit Meals on Wheel of Northwest Indiana, and donation items also can be brought for the Independent Cat Society.
