Condition of retired CPD sergeant shot Monday in North Center ‘improving,’ alderman says

The condition of a retired Chicago police sergeant who was shot Monday morning in North Center is improving, said Ald. Matt Martin, 47th.

After being shot three times by two people around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Berteau and Lincoln avenues, the former sergeant was in critical condition and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. On Tuesday, the 74-year-old man was receiving care in an intensive care unit, Martin said.

“At this point in the investigation, it appears that the shooting resulted from a verbal altercation between the victim and the offenders,” Martin added. “CPD doesn’t believe it was connected with an attempted robbery or carjacking.” Police said the victim was shot after exiting his vehicle.

Police are pursuing charges in connection with one person, who was arrested by Monday afternoon, Martin said.

In a statement around 1 p.m. Monday, Martin said officers were searching for a second person within a SWAT perimeter that was set up near the scene of the shooting. By 5:05 p.m., SWAT teams left the area, Martin said in another statement.

On Tuesday morning, Martin said there wasn’t yet “publicly available information to share” regarding the second person.

Martin said responding officers gave the former sergeant lifesaving aid — and an off-duty officer who lives nearby and responded may have been the first officer on the scene.

“We all are very grateful for their quick response,” Martin said.
