Construction has started on Giardino Trattoria & Pizzeria, by JH Hospitality Group, at 12 N. River St. in downtown Aurora.
The Hospitality Group is developing the Italian restaurant in one of three restaurant suites on the first floor of the renovated historic Hobbs Building at Galena Boulevard and River Street.
Leilani Asian Fusion has already opened in one of the other suites, at the corner of the intersection. Giardino Trattoria & Pizzeria will be the second. A third restaurant, which will feature a French Creole menu, is planned for the third suite.
The new Italian restaurant will offer a garden-inspired atmosphere, reflecting its name, “Giardino,” which means “garden” in Italian.
Giardino’s menu will showcase wood-fired pizzas crafted using traditional methods and fresh ingredients, according to a press release from developers. In addition to pizzas, the restaurant will feature a wide range of Italian dishes, with a focus on fresh, hand-made pasta prepared daily in-house.
Guests can expect classic Italian flavors, from hearty bolognese to eggplant parmesan, as well as a selection of antipasti, salads and traditional entrees, the release stated.
Leading the culinary team are two head chefs with extensive expertise in international cuisine, according to the release. Chef Ruben de la Cruz brings a passion for seafood and Italian cooking, honed over years working in top dining establishments, including Hugo’s Frog Bar and La Briola Cafe.
Joining him is Chef Martin Balderas, with over two decades of experience blending traditional Asian and European flavors, according to the release. He is dedicated to using locally sourced ingredients and supporting sustainable farming, which aligns with the restaurant’s vision of blending fresh flavors with innovative dishes.
Officials have said they want a family-type atmosphere for the restaurant.
Giardino will be the second Italian restaurant to open within the last year in the downtown.
Amore Mio, 33 W. New York St., opened a little more than a year ago. It is a higher-end Italian restaurant that includes a downstairs piano bar. It is just around the corner from Giardino.
A third Italian restaurant, an Italian osteria, is planned for 7 S. Broadway along the Water Street Mall. Work is beginning soon on it. It will be owned and operated by Megan and Chris Curren, co-owners of Graceful Ordinary in downtown St. Charles.
