Cooling Centers available in Evanston to help beat heatwave

With another summer heatwave expected to last all week, Evanston has several cooling centers available to residents looking to beat the several days of 90-plus-degree heat.

Community centers – including the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, Robert Crown Community Center, Fleetwood Jourdain Center and Levy Senior Center – in the city are open normal hours this week with the exception of Wednesday in observance of Juneteenth. For Juneteenth, the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center at 1823 Church Street will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as a dedicated cooling center.

Hours of operation for cooling centers are as follows:

  • Noyes Cultural Arts Center – 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Robert Crown Community Center – everyday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center – 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday
  • Levy Senior Center – 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday/Sunday

PACE has also announced a heat advisory to riders with high temperatures expected through Sunday, June 22.

A news release from PACE encouraged riders to wait in cool areas if possible and consider postponing non-essential travel. For those who have to travel, the news release tells riders to dress for the weather, avoid the sun and stay hydrated.
