With another summer heatwave expected to last all week, Evanston has several cooling centers available to residents looking to beat the several days of 90-plus-degree heat.
Community centers – including the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, Robert Crown Community Center, Fleetwood Jourdain Center and Levy Senior Center – in the city are open normal hours this week with the exception of Wednesday in observance of Juneteenth. For Juneteenth, the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center at 1823 Church Street will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as a dedicated cooling center.
Hours of operation for cooling centers are as follows:
- Noyes Cultural Arts Center – 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday
- Robert Crown Community Center – everyday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center – 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday
- Levy Senior Center – 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday/Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday/Sunday
PACE has also announced a heat advisory to riders with high temperatures expected through Sunday, June 22.
A news release from PACE encouraged riders to wait in cool areas if possible and consider postponing non-essential travel. For those who have to travel, the news release tells riders to dress for the weather, avoid the sun and stay hydrated.
