COPA investigating after police shoot and kill armed suspect who shot 2 in Pilsen

One man is dead and another man and woman are in critical condition following a police-involved shooting in the Pilsen neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Two officers assigned to the Robbery Task Force responded to multiple shots fired on the 1800 block of S. Blue Island Avenue at approximately 1:16 a.m.

Police said they encountered multiple armed individuals at the scene and shot an armed man. The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Another man and a woman were found in a nearby vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Police say the man killed by the officers was one of the people who struck these victims.

Both responding officers were transported to an area hospital for observation. One officer sustained minor injuries.

The Investigative Response Team was on the scene Sunday morning investigating the shooting.

The use of force by the officers is also being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Both officers will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.

The incident is the second shooting to be investigated by COPA this weekend. An officer opened fire during a traffic stop at a vehicle wanted in connection to a homicide in the New City neighborhood Friday evening, Chicago police said.
