COPA releases video of Chicago police fatally shooting man with knife in Little Village last month

A 911 call for a domestic dispute ended last month with Chicago police officers shooting and killing 58-year-old Timothy Glaze as he walked toward them carrying a knife in a Little Village apartment building, newly-released body camera footage shows.

Glaze’s girlfriend called 911 at least twice on Jan. 3, according to recordings released Tuesday by the the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. She told dispatchers that the couple recently had a fight and that he won’t leave her alone. She’s stuck in the corner of the bedroom, she said, and is holding a screwdriver.

“He won’t let me out of my room,” she said. “He got a knife in his hand.”

About five minutes later, officers showed up to Albany Terrace Apartments, a building for seniors, in the 3000 block of West 21st Place, which was captured on the body cameras. Four officers responded to the scene, but two ultimately fired shots, the COPA report indicated.

An officer knocks on Glaze’s sixth-floor apartment door, which swings open, and says “Chicago police.”

Glaze then repeats the phrase “Chicago police” and comes around a corner in the apartment.

“What’s going on,” an officer says.

“Nothing,” Glaze replies before pulling out a knife from behind his back.

Two officers back out of the apartment into the hallway. When Glaze raises the knife in his right hand, both officers start firing, hitting him multiple times. Glaze falls to the hallway floor, and the officers tell him to stop moving. They handcuff him and call for an ambulance.

Glaze was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide, caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Glaze’s mom, Barbara Dean, called the body camera footage “horrific” and “terrible.” She said she wants the police to admit they did something wrong.

“I just want justice for my son, that’s all,” she told the Tribune. “My last word, that’s all I want.”

Glaze’s girlfriend has previously said she regrets calling 911, and that she worried he was experiencing a mental breakdown due to cancer at the time of his death, as reported in the Chicago Sun-Times.
