Chicago police distributed an alert yesterday about 15 recent similar thefts from vehicles on Near South Side neighborhood streets.
A gun was stolen in all but one of the thefts. All but one of the thefts occurred either on South Michigan Avenue or South Wabash Avenue, according to the notice.
The first theft took place on July 21 and the most recent one happened on Sept. 14, police said. Most of the thefts occurred between 10:30 p.m. and 3 a.m.
In each instance, the thief or thieves entered an unlocked vehicle or broke a door window before seizing property inside, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The alert said no information was known about the thief or thieves.
Police said residents of the Near South Side neighborhood should park in well-lit areas and away from large vehicles, which may offer privacy for someone breaking into a vehicle. According to police, residents also should remember to lock their cars and invest in gun safes designed specifically for vehicles.
Any one with information about these thefts are asked to contact Chicago police detectives at 312-744-8263.
