Crown Point bicyclist dies after being struck by vehicle in Schererville

A 68-year-old Crown Point man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Schererville Friday evening.

The victim, identified as Donald Seitzinger of the 1000 Block of Easy St., died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries, according to a press statement from Lake County Coroner David Pastrick.

The Schererville Police and Fire departments were called to the scene at 7:15 p.m., learning that
Seitzinger was riding his bicycle southbound on the bike path crossing at Burr Street and 73rd Avenue when he was struck by a 2013 Toyota pickup truck traveling westbound on 73rd.

Seitzinger was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

“The driver of the truck remained on scene and was cooperative,” Schererville Police Commander Kevin Wagner said in a release. “The male on the bicycle was transported to a local hospital but
passed away from his injuries later that evening.”

Wagner said that the South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team is handling the crash investigation. He added that the unnamed driver was not ticketed or arrested at the scene.
