Crown Point man charged after shooting outside Burns Harbor bar

A Crown Point man is charged with four felonies, including criminal recklessness and intimidation, after threatening a bartender at a Burns Harbor bar and firing bullets in the parking lot, according to court documents.

Demondra E. Velez, 44, is charged with three counts of criminal recklessness and one count of intimidation, all Level 6 felonies, after the Sept. 13 incident at D’s Corner Tap, 295 US 20.

He was booked into Porter County Jail on Sept. 14 and has since booked out, according to online jail records. Velez is scheduled for an initial hearing on Oct. 2 before Magistrate Ana Osan.

Police found three spent shell casings in the parking lot and Velez, who police approached inside the bar, surrendered a tan and black handgun that had one live round in the chamber, documents state.

The bar’s manager told the bartender to call police after a gun was discharged in the parking lot, documents state. Velez told the bartender, “I’m going to make you pay for it now (expletive),” while he was armed, and “he then exited the establishment and that is when gunfire was heard,” according to the charges.
