The City of Crown Point is seeking applications for its Business Longevity Awards in the run-up to Mayor Pete Land’s State of the City address next month.
Businesses with more than 30 years in operation as of 2023 are invited to apply by visiting https://crownpointin.wufoo.com/forms/ms8fdnl1yb99xw/. Businesses must be located within city limits, and the deadline to apply is May 3.
“The City of Crown Point is proud to have such a vibrant small business community,” Land said. “When businesses choose Crown Point, they often make our great city their home for generations to come. I am honored to recognize the various small business owners who help make our community the best place to live, work and play in Northwest Indiana.”
Land’s annual State of the City address will begin at 5:30 p.m. May 29 at the Franciscan Health Pavilion at Bulldog Park, 183 S. The State of the City address will bring together Land and leaders of various city departments, local businesses and community stakeholders for a night of networking and local honors. The event will feature Land’s recap of the city’s progress over the past year and highlight things to come in 2024.
In addition to the Business Longevity Awards, the event will recognize youth community achievement, which honors two Crown Point High School students who have exceeded community service requirements; and excellence in development, which highlights a local developer for their contributions to the advancement of Crown Point.
Firefighters to host charity dodgeball
The Crown Point Firefighters Association will host its fifth annual Charity Dodgeball Tournament to benefit the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids (NICK) Foundation on May 4 at the Sparta Dome, 1355 E. North St., Crown Point.
More than 200 local first responders, elected officials, and local business representatives will play dodgeball to help raise money for the NICK Foundation. In 2023, the event raised more than $13,000.
Team registration is open to everyone and closes April 27. Teams can sign up by visiting: bit.ly/cpdodgeball.
The opening ceremony will begin at 4 p.m., and tickets are $5 at the door. There will be silent auction items, including gift cards, baskets and more. Food and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2009 by a local family that experienced the impact of childhood cancer.
“Knowing your child has cancer brings a lot of uncertainty,” said Kate Perschon, NICK co-founder. “There is nothing like having someone to turn to who has truly been there.”
Arbor Day spring clean-up slated
Crown Point will celebrate Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting and its annual Spring Clean-Up at 2 p.m. on April 26, at the Historic Maplewood Cemetery, near the Wells Street entrance.
Crown Point has been a Tree City USA Community for 21 years and is one of nine municipalities recognized as a Tree City community in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, according to a city spokesperson.
City staff and volunteers will convene for the city’s fourth annual Spring Clean-up Day from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Crown Point Sportsplex, 1313 E. North St. Gloves, garbage bags and grabbers will be provided. Volunteers can help clean up debris or rake in mulch at the Sportsplex and Solon Robinson Park.
Participants should dress in comfortable clothing and shoes they don’t mind getting dirty. Evan’s Tree Care will hand out free tree saplings while supplies last.

St. Pat’s Parade winners announced
The Crown Point City Council on Monday honored the winners of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade entrants. The winners are: Duffy Loonam Clan, first place; Nutrition Generation, second place; and Virginia Place Senior Living, third place.
