Des Watson’s late 3 lifts Loyola to 8-0 — its best start since 1962 — with a 74-72 win over South Florida

Des Watson didn’t make many of his shots Saturday, but the Loyola guard’s last one helped keep the Ramblers undefeated.

Watson drained a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left, and Loyola held on for a 74-72 victory against South Florida at Gentile Arena.

At 8-0, the Ramblers are off to their best start in 62 years. Loyola’s 1962-63 team started 21-0 and went on to win the program’s first — and only — national championship.

Watson, who hit the big 3 with Loyola trailing 71-69, led the Ramblers with 14 points despite shooting 3-for-15 from the floor. Kymany Houinsou added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Jalen Quinn scored 12 points and fellow reserve Sheldon Edwards Jr. 11.

Jayden Reid finished with 23 points for the Bulls (5-4). Kasen Jennings added 13 points, and Jamille Reynolds had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
