Diesel spill reported at Portage gas station

Nine gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the bottom of a pump at the Speedway station at 6370 Central Ave. in Portage last month.

As required by law, the spill was reported to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management on Nov. 12, the day it happened.

According to the report, a store employee noticed the leak at about 9:30 a.m. that day and shut off the breaker to stop the leak. No diesel fuel left the concrete or affected any waterway, the report said.

A Speedway maintenance technician cleaned up the spill and cleaned the concrete that morning. The pump was then scheduled for repair.

This week, the Porter County Board of Health reported the leak to the public. Indiana law requires that IDEM notify a county health officer of any release from an underground storage tank, surface spill or overfill and that the county health officer publish a public notice.
