Driver charged with reckless homicide after killing pedestrian in Lincolnwood: police

A man who was driving 77 mph on a Lincolnwood street and struck and killed a pedestrian, Lincolnwood police said, has been charged with reckless homicide and other charges.

The motor vehicle crash occurred Sunday, Feb. 11 at Devon and Crawford Avenues just after 4 p.m., and led to the death of the pedestrian, Kevin Toomey, 52, of the 5600 block of North Kenneth Avenue, Chicago, according to previous reporting.

Lincolnwood police and the North Regional Major Crime Task Force (NORTAF) investigated the crash and determined that a vehicle operated by Syed Haneff Ahmed was traveling westbound on Devon Avenue at a speed exceeding 35 mph above the posted speed limit and struck Toomey, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lincolnwood Deputy Police Chief Travis Raypole said Ahmed was driving 77 mph in a 35 mph zone.

On June 13, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Felony Review Unit charged Ahmed, of the 1600 block of Cantwell Road, Windsor Mill, Maryland with reckless homicide, speeding 35 mph over the speed limit, improper traffic lane usage, improper lane change without using a signal and improper passing/3+ wheels.

Raypole said the last charge means three of the vehicle’s wheels passed over into a different lane of traffic without the driver signaling a lane change.

Ahmed, who was not detained in his initial detention hearing, next has a court date July 18 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 105 at the Skokie courthouse, per police.

An arrest does not constitute a conviction.
