East Chicago man charged with killing girlfriend’s ex in Gary

An East Chicago man is charged with killing his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend in August in the front yard.

Jarvis “Jig” Green, 24, of East Chicago, was charged Oct. 2 with murder and a gun enhancement.

Charges came to light Monday after he had an initial court hearing before a magistrate.

The case was transferred to a new judge in late October. His next court date is Dec. 11 before Judge Samuel Cappas.

He faces 45-65 years on the murder count and another 5-20 on the enhancement. He is being held without bond.

Police responded at 9:17 a.m. Aug. 7 to the 2200 block of Connecticut Street in Gary.

Jesus Campos, 27, of Gary, was found fatally shot five times on the front lawn. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police found multiple 9-mm and rifle casings near his body, Det. Gary Runde with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force wrote in the charging affidavit.

A witness said the two men never got along and had a falling out.

Campos was there to pick up his son, 5, to take him to a water park, charges state.

Green’s girlfriend said Campos had called her sister to say he was headed over. She helped get her son dressed, then heard gunshots outside.

The woman claimed Green last visited the house days before on Aug. 4, but text messages appeared to reveal he was there Aug. 6-7. Cell phone location data later showed Green’s phone was in the area at the time of Campos’ death.

After a search warrant, police found Green’s wallet with an identification card and gun permit in the basement. They also found a blue backpack with ammunition with stamps that matched casings found near Campos’ body.

The woman said Green followed her to the door with a rifle after Campos arrived, before she went back to the bedroom. There was no arguing before she heard gunshots.

Police learned Green was fired from his job at an Amazon fulfillment center in Crown Point after he stopped showing up around the time Campos was killed.
