A 30-year-old man is being held in Cook County Jail Tuesday, accused of carjacking an elderly woman on Dempster Street in Morton Grove days before, after stealing her car keys and vehicle, and pushing her to the ground.
Sergio Diaz-Siso, whose address was not immediately known to authorities, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony, and felony aggravated battery and aggravated fleeing and eluding, according to a Morton Grove Police Department news release.
According to the release, on Feb. 7 at around 11:40 a.m., Morton Grove Police responded to the 6900 block of Dempster Street on a call of a carjacking. Upon arrival, officers determined the alleged thief — identified as Diaz-Siso — had used force to take a 72-year-old woman’s keys from her pocket, pushed her to the ground and stole her green 2009 Toyota Yaris.
The elderly woman, who police say is from Chicago, sustained minor injuries to her arms and
head, according to the release.
About 15 minutes after arriving to the Dempster Street scene, Morton Grove police officers located the stolen vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop at Dempster and Waukegan Road. The driver, identified as Diaz-Siso, fled but was eventually located in a parking lot in the 9000 block of Waukegan Road, the release explains.
Authorities state in the release that Diaz-Sista was arrested “without incident.”
He appeared in court Saturday at the Skokie courthouse in Skokie where a Cook County judge approved prosecutors’ request for pretrial detention.
