An elderly woman died Tuesday night in a Lockport apartment fire, according to Lockport fire officials.
Lockport Township Fire Protection District officials said they responded at 8:28 p.m. to a call of smoke in an apartment building in the 1100 block of Division Street.
Fire crews arrived within five minutes to the two-story, eight-unit building and saw smoke coming from a first-floor unit, officials said. The fire was contained to one unit.
As crews battled the fire, a search was conducted and officials said an elderly woman was found unresponsive inside the unit.
She was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
All other occupants safely exited the building, but the apartments are not inhabitable because of smoke damage, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials said.
