Anderson A. Contreras, 21, of the 700 block of Dundee Ave., was taken into custody later the same day and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to a news release from the police department and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. Officers arrived to find an adult man, later identified as 36-year-old Sunday Ogunjimi, of Elgin, with life-threatening injuries resulting from an alleged stabbing. He later died at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, the report said.
Police provided no information on the victim’s identity, what led to the stabbing, if Contreras knew the victim, if others witnessed the attack, if the alleged murder weapon was recovered or how many times the man was stabbed.
An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday by the Kane County Coroner’s Office found the preliminary cause of death to be “consistent with a stab wound.” Toxicology samples have been sent to a forensic lab for analysis, the report said.
Contreras will remain in the Kane County jail “until further order of the court,” the release said. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 24.
