An Elgin man was killed Sunday and five other people injured after his attempted illegal pass of another vehicle resulted in a head-on collision in unincorporated Woodstock, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the sheriff’s report, a 33-year-old man driving eastbound on Route 14 about 3:15 p.m. tried to pass the vehicle in front of him in a no-passing zone west of Dean Street. His 2018 Mercedes-Benz drove directly into a 2017 Toyota 4 Runner in the opposite lane. A third vehicle, a 2018 Jeep, hit the left rear of the Toyota trying to avoid the crash, officials said.
The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene and his 6-year-old male passenger air-lifted from the crash site with life-threatening injuries, the report said. While the driver was not believed to be wearing a seatbelt, the child was and airbags did deploy, according to officials.
Three of the four people in the Toyota — the 43-year-old male driver, an 11-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy — were critically injured, the report said. The man was taken to a local hospital and the children air-lifted to other hospitals.
A 43-year-old woman was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, the report said. All four are Cross Plains, Wisconsin, residents and were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
The driver of the Jeep was not injured, officilas said.
Prior to the crash, the driver of the Mercedes is believed to have been involved in another crash on Route 14 near the intersection with Kishwaukee Valley Road, the report said. No other details of that incident were released.
All of the incidents are being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
