Sunday CROP walk in Elgin to be led by Danise Habun
Elgin’s 39th CROP hunger walk, organized by Elgin Cooperative Ministries to raise money for disaster relief, disaster prevention and food programs, will be led by local volunteer Danise Habin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.
Registration gets underway at 1:30 p.m. behind the Elgin City Hall, 150 Dexter Court. Participants can walk a two-mile course or bike a five-mile course, with money raised through pledges and gifts made to those who complete the event, a news release said.
Habun is the event’s honorary chair. She is “being honored for her longtime service as a volunteer, nonprofit executive and board member who had worked diligently to create a community in Elgin that respects the rights and needs of people who have been marginalized by their financial poverty,” the release said.
CROP walks are held all over the country to support “faith-based work transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster,” the release said.
Last year, the Elgin CROP walk was the 65th largest in the country, organizers said. Of the money raised, 25% will go to Elgin Cooperative Ministries to fund local food pantries and soup kettles, the release said.
