Elgin Fire Department hosting an open house Saturday
The Elgin Fire Department is holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Station 2, 650 Big Timber Road.
Planned activites will include:
- Free children’s eye exams, courtesy of the Elburn Lions Club;
- Hazardous materials awareness information;
- Elgin Fire and Police Explorers’ post information;
- Fire extinguisher demonstrations;
- Car seat checks, courtesy Advocate Aurora Health;
- Games;
- Fire response demonstration at 11 a.m.;
- Fire Explorers demonstration at noon;
- Fire sprinkler demonstration at 1 p.m.

St. Catherine of Siena’s celebrates church’s 40th anniversary
St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in West Dundee will mark the 40th anniversary of the dedication of its church building with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop David Malloy at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.
All former and present members of the church are invited to the Mass, which will be followed by a parish and school picnic on the parish’s west lawn, according to a news release. Burgers, brats, hot dogs, roasted corn, baked beans, pasta salad, desserts and beverages will be served.
The church was founded on July 8, 1912, at the current site of the Dundee Township Historical Society, 426 Highland Ave., West Dundee. In 1927, the parish built its first school near the church.
A new school opened at its present site. 845 W. Main St., in 1965. All church services were conducted in the school’s gymnasium until the new church was built on the same property in 1984.

Elgin, Carpentersville, ECC to remember 9/11 with memorials
The village of Carpentersville, city of Elgin and Elgin Community College will be holding ceremonies Wednesday, Sept. 11, to remember those who died as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 23 years ago.
Elgin’s ceremony will take place at 9 a.m at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, according to the city’s website.
Carpentersville’s is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Fire House Station 91, 213 Spring St.
Elgin Community College’s event is set for 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of Building B on its main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.
Elgin Area Chamber open house, free lunch set for next week
The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce is holding an open house and complimentary luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at its Elgin office, 31 S. Grove Ave., to celebrate Chamber of Commerce Week.
Carol Gieske, CEO and president of the Elgin chamber, said in a news release that the event provides a chance for the public to meet chamber board members and staff, connect with other chamber members, engage with community leaders and celebrate local businesses.
