Elgin City Council candidates must file petitions Oct. 21-28

Candidates who want to run for Elgin City Council seats in 2025 must be filed their petitions between Monday, Oct. 21, and Monday, Oct. 28, at the Elgin City Clerk’s Office, Room 202, in the Robert Gilliam Municipal Complex, 150 Dexter Court.

The clerk’s office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to a news release. Objections to nominating petitions must be filed at the office no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, a city news release said.

There are four, four-year council terms open in the April 1 election. If more than 16 candidates file, a primary election will be held Feb. 25.

Tickets on sale for Sing-Along Messiah being Dec. 6 at ECC

The third annual Elgin Sing-Along Messiah will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the Blizzard Theatre on the campus of Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive.

Tickets cost $5 (with a $2 handling fee) and can be purchased now at elginsing-alongmessiah.org.

The concert will feature the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Midwest Opera Theatre and members of the Elgin Master Chorale. Soloists set to perform are soprano Maria Kanyova, mezzo soprano Emma Dickens, tenor Stephen Michael Patrick and bass David Govertsen.

Judge Julio César Valdez joins Gail Borden library foundation

Kane County Circuit Court Judge Julio César Valdez is the newest member of the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation’s Board of Directors.

An Elgin native, Valdez was selected to be a Kane County associate judge in 2019 and has since been elevated by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as a circuit judge.

He also has been a member of the Elgin Planning and Zoning Commission, the Elgin Hispanic Network and the Centro de Informacion Board of Trustees and is a current board member of Elgin Community Bikes. He also serves as a member of the Kane County Justice System’s Strategic Planning Committee.

In a prepared statement, Valdez said he has loved libraries his whole life and worked at the Gail Borden Public Library in his youth.

Great Elgin Pipe Organ Tour to stop at St. John’s Church

The Great Elgin Pipe Organ Tour will be making a stop at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 115 N. Spring St.

Jeff Neufeld, music director and organist for First Congregational Church of Elgin, will play the pipe organ in a free concert at St. John’s, according to the tour’s website.

Neufeld began the tour in September, and is making its way to various churches in downtown Elgin through May, with a finale concert planned for First Congregational. Some concerts will feature piano/organ duets, instrumentals and hymns.
