Elgin police officer cleared in non-fatal shooting of suicidal man

Elgin police Officer Fernando Camacho is back on the job after being cleared of any wrongdoing in a non-fatal shooting that occurred in January, a city news release said.

An independent internal investigation conducted by a law firm hired by the city “concluded that Officer Camacho’s actions were justified and in compliance with department policies,” the release said.

Camacho also was cleared in an investigation done by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, which found his actions were justified and criminal charges not warranted.

The shooting occurred after Camacho responded to a Jan. 13 call about a suicidal person at a home in the 900 block of Oak Ridge Boulevard.

According to reports, Camacho arrived at the residence to find a 29-year-old man with wounds to his neck and torso. He attempted to assist the victim, who struggled with him and grabbed a knife to stab himself. When the man advanced on Camacho with the weapon, he fired his weapon and then rendered aid until medical personnel arrived, the report said.

Per police policy, a second internal probe is done in all shooting cases to ensure no department rules or regulations were broken. Camacho was on paid administrative leave while the reviews were conducted.

The owners of Shar’s Armanetti Fine Wine and Spirits, 222 W. Main St., have obtained a village permit to demolish the fire-damaged store in Carpentersville.

Village Manager John’OSullivan said it is not known if the owner plans to build a new structure. They would need to go through a permitting process and reviews by village’s planning and zoning commission and village board before construction could begin.

A May 19 fire at the store resulted in an estimated $1 million in property damage and $500,000 in property loss, Fire Chief Bill Anaszewicz said at the time.
