Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras season opens with 3 shows

The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras will present three concerts on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Blizzard Theater in the Elgin Community Arts Center on the campus of Elgin Community College.

In the first at 1:30 p.m., titled “CANVAS: EYSO Prelude, Sinfonia, and Sinfonia/Philharmonia Percussion Ensemble,” pieces will include Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Nimrod” by Edward Elgar, a news release said.

“CANVAS: EYSO Philharmonia, Flute Choir, and Brass Choir” at 4:30 p.m. features several pieces, including “Fanfares Liturgiques” by Henri Tomasi and “Big and Bright” by Timothy Hagen.

The final show at 7:30 p.m., “CANVAS: EYSO Youth Symphony,” includes Leopold Stokowski’s arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue among other pieces.

Volunteers, businesses presented with East Dundee awards

Three business owners and one community volunteer were recognized by the village of East Dundee with 2024 awards presented at an event held Oct. 5 by the Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce. The recipients were:

Community Service Award: Phil Aleo, who has written 26 historical/photographic books, including “Dundee Township — Moments Frozen in Time,” hosts historic walks highlighting East Dundee’s churches, taverns and the Haeger Mansion, and volunteers at East Dundee’s Annual Flag Day Salute and as a Living Windows Actor at Dickens in Dundee.

Business of the Year Award: Santa’s Village Amusement & Water Park.

Customer Excellence Award: Van’s Frozen Custard and Burgers.

Community Partner Award: Duke’s Blues N BBQ.

Elgin educator receives Kindercare’s Educational Excellence Award

Louisa Perez, an elementary school teacher at South Street KinderCare in Elgin, is the recipient of the Educational Excellence Award from KinderCare Learning Cos.

Perez was one of 27 KinderCare teachers nationwide to receive the distinction, according to a news release. KinderCare employs 42,000 teachers and staff. More than 400 were nominated by their colleagues for recognition.

In a prepared statement, Anna Hill, center director at South Street KinderCare, said that Perez finds what each child is interested in and uses that to make connections to the learning they are doing in the classroom.
