ESO to present Beethoven Violin Concerto at the Hemmens
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will perform Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.
Stella Chen, an award-winning artist who has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Belgian National Orchestra and other orchestras, will be the featured guest musician, the release said.

South Elgin hosting father/son Nerf battle event March 8
The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department will host a father/son Nerf battle from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Corron Elementary School, 455 Thornwood Way, South Elgin.
Designed for fathers and their children, ages 5 to 12, the event will feature a Nerf battle and a dodgeball throwdown, according to the village’s website. All equipment, snacks, soft drinks and other activities will be provided.

Reception for ‘Preserving Black Joy’ art exhibit at Judson
A reception for the Judson University Department of Art and Design’s new exhibit, “Preserving Black Joy: Portraits Celebrating Blackness,” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Draewell Gallery on campus, 1151 N. State St., Elgin.
The exhibit includes tintype photographs that honor the legacy of Black families and highlight the richness of the Black community in Elgin, according to the department’s Facebook page. The photos are on display through Friday, March 21.

Seed library to open, Irish dancers perform at Dundee Library
Dundee Library in East Dundee will have free seeds available and will present a performance of Irish dancing in two programs being offered Saturday, March 1.
While supplies last, a wide variety of flower, herb, vegetable, fruit and native plant seeds will be available in a seed library on the main floor of the library, 555 Dundee Ave., according to the library’s newsletter. Each packet has growing instructions and enough seeds for about three plants.
From 2 to 3 p.m., Irish dancers from The McNulty School of Irish Dance will perform. The school was founded by Barbara McNulty in 1971 in Naperville, according to the organization’s website.

Maple Sugaring Days at LeRoy Oakes preserve this weekend
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold Maple Sugaring Days from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.
Attendees will learn how to tap a maple tree and try their hands at drilling and setting a tap, according to the district’s website. Staff will then simmer maple sap over an open fire.
Doughnuts, hot cocoa and ice cream drizzled with syrup from the district’s Maple Cafe will be served. Locally sourced maple syrup will be available to purchase by cash or check only.
There will also be a beer tent featuring Maple Replay, a maple-flavored beer made with Funks Grove Maple Syrup by Riverlands Brewing.
