Former Cub Sammy Sosa to sign autographs at Elgin restaurant
Former Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa will be meeting fans and signing autographs for a fee from noon to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Old Republic Kitchen + Bar, 359 S. Randall Road, Elgin.
Patrons will receive 10% off their restaurant/bar tab with any autograph purchase, according to Old Republic’s website.

Library holding program on best winter hikes in Elgin, Kane
A presentation on the best places to take winter hikes in Elgin and Kane County will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
Corey Begalka, a member of the Greater Kane County Wild Ones environmental group, will share his favorite hiking trails in Elgin and surrounding areas at the free event, according to the library’s website. Attendees can bring a sack lunch or purchase lunch, snacks and warm beverages at the library cafe.
Weather permitting, participants can take a brisk hike around the library so Begalka will point out native plant species, the site said.

Groundhog Day event set for Feb. 2 at Randall Oaks Zoo
Randall Oaks Zoo will hold a Groundhog Day party from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2.
Along with a ceremony to determine if the groundhog sees its shadow, forecasting whether the end of winter is near, zookeepers will share stories, offer information about groundhog lore and lead songs dedicated to the zoo’s resident groundhog, Cedar, according to the Dundee Township Park District Winter Program Guide.
