Get a photo with Santa at Kimball house this weekend

Fifteen-minute time blocks are being booked for those who want to have a photo taken with Santa at Elgin’s historic Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House this weekend.

Slots are available between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, and 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the 302 W. Chicago St. home, according to the Elgin History Museum’s website.

Participants take their own photos, which can include children, pets, grandparents, family members and props, the site said. Craft activities and snacks will be available for those who are waiting for their allotted time.

Elgin Public Museum to celebrate ‘Lucy’ discovery anniversary

The Elgin Public Museum’s “We Love Lucy” event, a celebration of archaeologists finding “Lucy,” one of the earliest known members of the human family, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 23.

Lucy was found by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray on Nov. 24, 1974, at Hadar in Ethiopia, according to the Arizona State University Institute of Human Origins website. Her bones date back about 3.18 million years.

Archaeologist Abby Rasmussen, a museum assistant, will discuss the discovery, its impact on evolutionary science and what has been learned since then, according to a post on the museum’s Facebook page.

The celebration is free, although donations will be accepted. Light refreshments are planned.

Winter lights at neighborhood butterfly garden this Saturday

The Northeast Neighborhood Association (NENA) of Elgin will be lighting up its butterfly garden at 150 Ann St. from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23.

In addition to seasonal lighting, the garden will hold storyboards on loan from the Morton Arboretum that tell the story of Monarch butterflies’ migratory journey to and from Mexico, according to the NENA Facebook page.

Free tamales and hot cocoa will be served. Tables will be set up for making bird seed ornaments and holiday cards and Santa will be making a visit.

Gray Matters Podcast Festival being held at Side Street Studio

Side Street Studio Arts will present its inaugural Gray Matters Podcast Festival from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at its performance space, 15 Ziegler Court in Elgin.

The event is part of the Audio Matters series and will feature three podcasts, according to the Side Street Studio Arts website.

Meredith Brasher and her Insurance Versus History podcast will open up the evening at 6:30 p.m. followed by Raphael Gomez with the Maybe It’s Spiritual podcast at 7:45 p.m. and Patrick Hicks’ Music Stories at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the door and at sidestreetstudioarts.org/audio-matters.
